Mercury Retrograde: The Universe's Edit Button
This episode reframes Mercury retrograde as an optical illusion rather than a cosmic curse, exploring how communication glitches, tech mishaps, and misunderstandings can reveal where we’re rushing through life. It also offers a gentler way to use this season: finish what’s unfinished, clear the clutter, and edit the inner stories that no longer serve you.
Chapter 1
The Cosmic Optical Illusion
Dr. Elisa Malangone
Hello, gorgeous souls, and welcome back to Ignite Your Insight. I'm Dr. Elisa Malangone, and as always, I am so grateful you've chosen to spend a little part of your day with me.Today we're talking about something that has become almost legendary.Mercury Retrograde.I honestly smile every time I hear someone say..."Well...Mercury must be in Retrograde."Almost like Mercury has become the universal scapegoat for every inconvenience.Your phone freezes...Retrograde.The printer jams...Retrograde. Your GPS decides to take you on a tour of the entire city instead of the shortest route...Retrograde. Your partner completely misunderstands what you thought was a perfectly clear text message.Definitely Mercury Retrograde.(Laugh.)And wouldn't you know it...this episode is actually being released right in the middle of Mercury Retrograde.Now...I want to say something right at the beginning because I think it's important.I don't actually know why these things seem to happen during Mercury Retrograde.I don't have scientific evidence that says Mercury causes technology to malfunction or conversations to become confusing. But I can honestly tell you...After years of watching these seasons come and go...They certainly seem to.Just this past week I bought a new adapter for my computer.I had researched it.Read the compatibility list.Made sure it matched my system.Everything told me this should be simple.I plugged it in...Nothing.Absolutely nothing. Now maybe that's coincidence.Maybe not.But here's what fascinated me.Instead of getting frustrated...I found myself smiling.Because I thought..."Well...there it is."Then a conversation happened where I walked away thinking I'd explained myself beautifully.Only to discover the other person had interpreted something completely different than what I intended.Again...Communication.Mercury.Now whether you believe astrology or not...Those moments make you stop and pay attention. So let's talk about what Mercury Retrograde actually is. Remember being a child and sitting in the back seat of your family's car? You look out the window and notice another car beside you.For just a few seconds...It looks like it's moving backward. Is it? No. It's simply moving at a different speed than you are.Your perspective creates the illusion. That's exactly what's happening with Mercury.Mercury never actually starts driving in reverse around the Sun.It only appears that way from Earth because Mercury travels much faster around the Sun than we do.It's called apparent retrograde motion.Science explains the motion.Astrology explores the meaning. For thousands of years people noticed that during these periods communication became trickier.Technology seemed a little less cooperative.Travel required more patience...contracts deserved another reading.Did Mercury cause those things?I honestly don't know. But I think that's almost the wrong question.Because whether Mercury causes it or not...Something wonderful happens. We slow down. And slowing down changes everything. Now here's another fun little fact.I was actually born during Mercury Retrograde. Some astrologers say people born during a Retrograde—or people with Mercury strongly placed in their birth chart, which is also true for me—sometimes navigate these seasons a little differently.Maybe because we're somehow wired to think more internally.Maybe not.I don't know if that's true.I simply know I've stopped fearing these seasons.Instead...I've started partnering with them. And that's where Mercury Retrograde became incredibly useful to me.
Dr. Elisa Malangone
I think Mercury Retrograde has gotten a bad reputation.People spend three weeks waiting for disaster."What shouldn't I do?""What if everything falls apart?""What if I sign the wrong contract?""What if..."What if...Nothing is falling apart at all? What if life is simply inviting us to move differently?I've often said on this podcast that life has seasons. There are seasons to leap. There are seasons to create. There are seasons to rest. There are seasons to complete. And Mercury Retrograde...Whether you believe in astrology or simply appreciate the symbolism...Feels like a beautiful season for completion. This has become my favorite time to complete unfinished projects .No...Seriously.Every single Retrograde I find myself looking around my home thinking..."Why am I still keeping this?"Closets.Kitchen drawers. My purse. My office.Old files.Old notebooks.Thousands of screenshots on my phone.Emails I've been meaning to delete for three years. The downloads folder on my computer that has become a museum of things I forgot existed.I clean it all.Because here's what I've discovered.Physical clutter creates mental clutter.Every unfinished task quietly asks your brain for attention.Every pile says,"Don't forget about me."Every unopened drawer whispers,"You'll deal with me later."Until eventually...You're carrying around hundreds of tiny unfinished conversations with your own mind.Mercury Retrograde gives me permission to finish them. Not just physical projects.Mental ones.Emotional ones.I revisit presentations before I present them.I update my website.I rewrite biographies.I polish podcast descriptions.I return things I've borrowed.I answer emails I've been avoiding.I finally make self-care visits.I organize my digital photographs.I back up my hard drives.I review my subscriptions.I even ask myself..."What belief have I outgrown?"And I think that's the most important Retrograde project of all.Because maybe Mercury isn't asking us to edit our calendars.Maybe it's asking us to edit our identity. To reread those stories we've been telling ourselves."I'm too late.""I'm too old.""I'm not ready.""I've always been this way."Have you?Or have you simply been reading the same chapter over and over without realizing you've become someone new?Maybe Mercury Retrograde isn't the Universe editing your life.Maybe it's inviting you to become the editor. To refine. To revisit. To reorganize. To reconnect. To complete. And maybe that's why I don't fear Mercury Retrograde anymore.Because every time it comes around...I come out the other side feeling lighter than when I went in.So perhaps this week, instead of asking,"Why is this happening to me?"Try asking..."What is this season inviting me to complete?"Because perhaps Mercury Retrograde isn't delaying your future.Perhaps it's lovingly helping you clear the path toward it.Until next time, gorgeous souls...Keep choosing curiosity over certainty, presence over panic, and completion over clutter.Much Love, Light, and Insight.
